How KDP royalties work
Kindle eBook: 35% vs 70%
Amazon offers two royalty tiers. The 70% rate requires: list price between $2.99–$9.99, enrollment in KDP Select (exclusive to Amazon for 90 days), and the book meeting quality standards. All other books earn 35%. A delivery fee (~$0.15 per MB of file size) is deducted from 70% royalties.
KDP Print royalties
Print-on-demand royalties = 60% of list price minus the printing cost. Printing costs depend on page count and trim size. Expanded Distribution (selling via other retailers) uses a 40% royalty instead of 60%. You keep the rest after printing.
When do you get paid?
Amazon pays royalties approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale occurred. Payment is via direct deposit, wire transfer, or check, depending on your country and settings.
Pricing strategy tips
For eBooks: $2.99 is the minimum for the 70% tier and is a common impulse-buy price. $9.99 is the top of the 70% bracket. For print: aim for at least 3× your printing cost to leave margin after Amazon's cut. A 250-page book with ~$3.15 printing cost needs $9.50 list price to earn ~$2.55/sale.
